IHE: What are Amgros’ main tasks in the Danish system for purchasing hospital pharmaceuticals?
Flemming Sonne: Amgros plays a vital role in the procurement of hospital pharmaceuticals. For more than 25 years, Amgros has been responsible for the pharmaceutical procurement service of the five regional authorities in Denmark. We are a public organization owned by the regions. And we save the regions approximately €375 millions annually. Amgros’ main task is to ensure that public hospitals in Denmark always have the pharmaceuticals they need, and that these pharmaceuticals have been procured at the lowest possible price.
IHE: How does Amgros support Danish Medicines Council (Medicinrådet) with economic evaluations?
Flemming Sonne: The task of the newly established Danish Medicines Council is to ensure fast and homogeneous use of new and existing medicines across hospitals and regions. Amgros supports the Medicine Council by making and assessing health economic evaluations enabling the Medicine Council to make the best decisions possible. The economic evaluations are a core component of the decisions made by the Council. The health economic evaluations will enhance the basis for Amgros’ price negotiations and calls for tenders.
