New IHE publiccations

The value of a QALY (Quality Adjusted Life Year) and the value of a statistical life (VSL) are central measures for health economic evaluations and for the decision-making of governmental agencies.

The general population’s valuation of a QALY and VSL are estimated in two recently published IHE studies. A study published in Risk Analysis provides support for a higher VSL in diseases that cause a higher level of dread (e.g., cancer) and that VSL is higher when the risk is eliminated. A study published in The European Journal of Health Economics supports a value of a QALY of around SEK 3 million and which is constant with respect to the numbers of QALYs gained.

The studies are part of ongoing thesis work at the Faculty of Medicine, Lund University.
